Both products support real-time traffic, visitors, campaigns, events, goals, segmentation, dashboards, ecommerce, exports, and APIs. Clicky centers the experience on live visitor paths and its Spy stream, then adds heatmaps, uptime, alerts, media, outbound, and download reports across plan levels.

Matomo includes a wider analytics platform: customizable dashboards, visitor profiles, tag manager, content and site-search reporting, ecommerce, campaign tools, privacy controls, and extensive APIs. Managed Cloud includes features such as heatmaps, session recordings, funnels, and experimentation; On-Premise packaging distinguishes free base capabilities from paid bundles and plugins.

Hosting and control

Clicky is vendor-hosted; its white-label service is also hosted. Matomo Cloud handles hosting, maintenance, updates, monitoring, and backups, while Matomo On-Premise places application, database, security, scaling, upgrades, backups, and recovery under the operator’s control.

Self-hosting can satisfy a need for infrastructure and location control, but it is not free operations. Calculate staff time, observability, high availability, database growth, geolocation updates, security response, plugin compatibility, and support. Matomo documents migration between Cloud and On-Premise, which reduces but does not eliminate transition work.

Privacy and behavioral detail

Matomo publishes extensive privacy configuration, consent integration, anonymization, deletion, and consent-exempt setup guidance for eligible circumstances. Its flexibility also means the operator is responsible for configuring it appropriately. Session recording and user profiles need especially careful masking, access, purpose, and retention.

Clicky’s default privacy mode anonymizes IP addresses and avoids cookies, with optional settings for more persistent detail. Heatmaps are available on Pro Plus and above, but Clicky heatmaps are not session recordings. Compare the precise fields, settings, and retention needed rather than treating either platform as a single fixed privacy posture.

Clicky publishes a free tier and paid hosted plans beginning at $9.99 monthly. Matomo On-Premise Community is free software with unlimited users and hits, while support and advanced bundles are paid; Matomo Cloud uses traffic-based managed pricing and enterprise quotes. Choose Clicky for low-friction hosted analytics, detailed live paths, and a modest initial budget. Choose Matomo when self-hosting, tag management, broad platform control, behavioral tooling, or enterprise data governance justifies the added complexity.
