The event model, and what it buys you
GA4 represents everything a visitor does as an event with parameters, rather than as a pageview with bolted-on extras. That single decision is what lets one property hold a website and a mobile app together, and it is why custom measurement in GA4 is a matter of defining events rather than fighting a fixed schema.
On top of that model sit standard reports, a Realtime view, free-form explorations, funnel and path analysis, configurable audiences, attribution reporting, and predictive capabilities where a property is eligible. For teams whose recurring questions involve cohorts, campaigns, apps, and multi-step journeys, that analytical surface is very hard to match at any price.
Free raw data in your own warehouse
Native BigQuery export is the feature most worth knowing about. A standard GA4 property can stream row-level event data into BigQuery, which means your analytics is not a walled dashboard — it is a dataset you can join to orders, subscriptions, support tickets, or anything else you own, and query with SQL.
That capability used to sit behind enterprise licensing across the industry. Having it available on the no-subscription tier is genuinely remarkable, and it is the reason many data teams keep a GA4 property running even when a simpler dashboard handles their day-to-day reporting.
Privacy and governance controls are extensive
GA4 ships consent mode, regional data controls, IP handling options, configurable retention, data-deletion requests, and granular switches for advertising features and Google signals. A property can be configured to be quite restrained, and Google documents each control.
Retention is worth reading carefully because it works differently than people expect: for standard properties, user-level and event-level retention can be set to 2 or 14 months, and that setting governs explorations and funnel reports. Standard aggregated reports are not affected by it, so historical trend reporting persists regardless. Analytics 360 extends event-level retention up to 50 months.
Who tends to love it
GA4 is the natural home for teams running Google Ads, measuring a website and an app together, building audiences for activation, or needing raw export into a warehouse. It also has the deepest ecosystem in the category by a wide margin: documentation, courses, agencies, connectors, and people who already know it.
Because it is so configurable, it rewards deliberate setup. Decide your event taxonomy, consent behaviour, retention, and advertising settings up front, and it will answer a very wide range of questions. Analytics 360 exists for organizations that need contractual guarantees, higher limits, and support.
Questions this profile answers
Is Google Analytics 4 free?
The standard tier has no direct subscription fee. Implementation, governance, and any BigQuery storage and query usage beyond free allowances still carry real cost. Analytics 360 is a paid enterprise product sold by contract.
How long does GA4 keep data?
On standard properties, user-level and event-level retention is set to 2 or 14 months and governs explorations and funnel reports. Standard aggregated reports are not affected by the retention setting. Analytics 360 extends event-level retention up to 50 months.
Can GA4 export raw data?
Yes. Native BigQuery export streams row-level event data into your own Google Cloud project, including from standard properties.
